Challenge Program

Students who are enrolled in the AVS school program can challenge a course in Grade 10, Grade 11 and Grade 12. Course Challenges will follow the criteria and procedures of our school district Course Challenge policy 7.19 and the ministry Course Challenge procedures.

Students must fit the following criteria:

  • be currently enrolled
  • have not completed the course through previous enrollment
  • can give compelling evidence that he or she will succeed in the challenge
  • shows that the challenge is linked to his or her student learning plan
  • demonstrate that they have met the learning outcomes for the course being challenged.
  • understand the challenge process should maintain the high standards of a quality Education

The school is responsible for outlining the expectations of the challenge. Materials will be provided to ensure that the challenger is aware of the expectations and learning outcomes are before proceeding with the challenge.

The challenge consists of two parts. First a mark for the demonstrated knowledge of the course material. Second, success on the Provincial exam or in the case of courses without a Provincial exam a final exam covering the course.

Requirements for challenge:

  • The entire course must be challenged.
  • Students will be granted only one opportunity to challenge a specific course.
  • Students may use a variety of ways to demonstrate that they have met the learning outcomes of the course.
  • Students will receive a letter grade and percentage mark for a challenge. These marks will be recorded on report cards and transcripts.
  • Provincial examinable courses have two parts. First the student challenges the school portion of the mark. If successful, students will then be provided the opportunity to write the provincial exam. The final mark will be blended using the school and exam marks.

Equivalency (Grade 8 to 12)

Students may also apply for course equivalency for courses taken in other institutions or jurisdictions outside the BC School System. In order to receive credits through Equivalency, students must provide the appropriate documentation as proof of successful completion of the course. This includes:

  • comparison of learning outcomes (minimum of 80% alignment)
  • comparison of general subject matter
  • comparison of depth and breadth of coverage of subject matter
  • comparison of assessment methods, instruments and standards

To gain successful equivalency the student must meet the same standards as those expected of students who take the course through regular classes. Students will receive a letter grade and percentage mark for a successful equivalency or a Transfer Standing if information is insufficient to assign a letter grade and percentage.
